The Nikkei 225 fell for a second straight session amid declines in U.S. equities at the end of the previous week. The afternoon rebound was limited, and the index closed at ¥63,081.86.
U.S. equities fell, with selling spreading mainly across technology stocks. The SOX semiconductor index also plunged, and the Nikkei 225 opened lower at 62,972.02.
After the opening, selling led by some semiconductor-related stocks and high-priced AI-related stocks pushed the Nikkei 225 below 63,000 at one point. Buying emerged in semiconductor manufacturing equipment stocks and other shares that had reported strong earnings, and the index briefly moved into positive territory, but it ended the morning session in negative territory.
The index turned higher again in the afternoon on dip-buying, but selling once again prevailed toward the close, sending it into negative territory. At the close, the Nikkei 225 was down ¥208.25 from the previous day at ¥63,081.86. Trading volume was 2.32819 billion shares, and trading value was ¥7.6403 trillion.
Among individual stocks, Tokyo Electron, Advantest and Lasertec rose. Decliners included Kioxia Holdings, Recruit Holdings, SoftBank Group and Kyocera.
