The Nikkei Average stood at ¥64,436.30 at the afternoon-session open, down ¥1,779.04 from the previous day, starting near the morning close. While intraday Dow futures supported the downside, Asian stocks generally remained weak. There were also reports that rising domestic long-term interest rates were contributing to market caution.
Sectors declined broadly. Nonferrous metals, glass and ceramics products, and electrical equipment were among the most notable decliners. Among the stocks with the highest trading value on the TSE Prime Market, Sumitomo Metal Mining, Mitsubishi Materials, Mitsui Mining and Smelting, TDK, SoftBank Group, SUMCO, Murata Manufacturing and Recruit Holdings were lower.
Tokio Marine Holdings, meanwhile, rose, resulting in divergent stock movements. Across the market, firmness in Dow futures in after-hours trading also provided some reassurance in the Tokyo market.
