BOJ Governor Ueda Kazuo (植田和男), who attended the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in the United States, held separate talks with the US Treasury Secretary and said he believed they had held useful discussions. The talks addressed the importance of appropriate communication on price stability in light of changes in the environment surrounding the global economy.
Looking back on the G20 meeting, Governor Ueda said he intended to pursue careful discussions with other countries, including on interest-rate hikes, including at future monetary policy meetings. He indicated that discussions would continue, with close attention to factors such as the situation in the Middle East, AI-related developments and exchange-rate fluctuations.
Finance Minister Katayama (片山) also explained Japan-US coordinated foreign-exchange intervention and said the meeting had provided an opportunity to gain the understanding of other countries. The G20 joint statement, however, was not finalized due to opposition from China.
