In the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 4th, the first business day after a holiday, the Nikkei Stock Average fell for a second straight session and briefly dropped below ¥61,000 during the morning session. The decline exceeded ¥2,200 at one point, taking the index to its lowest level in approximately three months. As vote counting continued in the US midterm elections, reports that the Democrats were gaining an advantage prompted expectations that AI-related regulation would be more likely, leading to selling in semiconductor stocks.
The morning close was ¥60,835.36, down ¥2,246.50 from the previous day. TOPIX fell 98.01 points to 3,832.27.
Selling spread mainly across semiconductor-related stocks against the backdrop of the midterm elections, and shares including those of semiconductor manufacturing equipment giant Advantest also fell. Chief Market Strategist Ichikawa Masahiro (市川雅浩) said that the Democrats securing a majority could create uncertainty over future policy management.
News reported in related links said that developments involving the Democrats and caution over AI-related matters were weighing on share prices.
