Sports Direct, a leading UK sports retailer, has opened 2 stores in Nairobi as its first venture into Africa. The stores are located at Sarit Centre and Galleria Mall, with approximately 930㎡ and 725㎡ of floor space, respectively. According to the announcement, the stores were launched as a joint venture with local distributor Hudson Group.
The stores are expected to carry sports brands including Adidas, Asics, New Balance, Nike, Puma and Under Armour. They are also expected to feature Everlast, Slazenger, Karrimor, Jack Wills and USA Pro, private-label brands of Frasers Group.
Chris Muscat, CEO of Hudson Group, said that the opening of the 2 stores in Nairobi marked an important milestone in the partnership between the company and Frasers Group, adding that he welcomed the opportunity to provide the region with a large-scale sports retail experience.
The move has also been linked to Hudson Group’s launch of Nike’s flagship store in the region late last year, suggesting that the company aims to continue expanding its large-scale retail operations in Africa.
