The Nikkei Stock Average ended the morning session in the Tokyo stock market on the 25th at ¥66,318.14, up ¥804.15 from the previous day, marking its fifth straight advance. The gain briefly exceeded ¥800, bringing the index back above the psychological ¥66,000 level. Against the backdrop of gains in U.S. technology stocks in the previous day's session, buying spread across the Japanese market, particularly in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks.
Tokyo Electron and Advantest, major semiconductor manufacturing equipment companies, contributed to the Nikkei's advance. Financial stocks, including banks and securities companies, also attracted buying on expectations of higher earnings from improved lending rates amid rising long-term interest rates. Of the Tokyo Stock Exchange's 33 sectors, 16 rose, including marine transportation, mining and insurance, while 17 fell, including other products, precision instruments and pharmaceuticals.
Trading value on the TSE Prime Market exceeded ¥3.7131 trillion. There were 1,069 advancing issues, 425 declining issues and 58 unchanged issues. Among individual stocks, Ibiden stood out for its rise, and regional bank shares also gained, while SoftBank Group traded weakly.
Trading at times struggled to gain momentum amid weekend-related factors and lingering caution over interest rates, but buying in semiconductor-related stocks supported the market as it continued to price in the positive factors that had accumulated during Silver Week. There is also a view that intermittent trading related to dividend entitlements will become a market driver going forward.
