Tokio Marine Holdings has announced a policy to split each common share into 15 shares, along with the record date and effective date. The article compares shareholder returns with those of MS&AD and SOMPO.
Tokio Marine Holdings announced on 25 August 2026 that it plans to split each common share into 15 shares, with 30 September as the record date and 1 October as the effective date. This article compares the performance and shareholder returns of the three companies, including major non-life insurers MS&AD and SOMPO.
If the split is implemented, the minimum investment amount is expected to fall from approximately ¥740,000 before the split to around ¥50,000 after the split, based on the assumed share price adjustment, lowering the investment threshold for individual investors. Tokio Marine Holdings also plans to introduce a shareholder benefit program alongside the split, offering electronic money and other benefits to shareholders holding 100 or more shares for at least 3 years.
The initial eligibility record date for the shareholder benefits is 31 March 2027. Shareholders who have continuously held 100 or more shares for at least 3 years will receive benefits worth ¥7,500 for the first year and ¥2,500 every year thereafter. The company explains that although the investment unit will become smaller after the split, the split itself will not change the company’s underlying value.
Meanwhile, MS&AD and SOMPO reported increases in insurance revenue and profit attributable to owners of the parent year on year in the first quarter, and have also provided full-year outlooks and projected annual dividends. The three companies share an expansion of their overseas insurance businesses and a focus on strengthening shareholder returns, while their performance may also be affected by factors including natural disasters and foreign exchange movements.
