A demonstration test of a vending machine equipped with next-generation chalcopyrite solar cells was conducted for approximately one year, confirming annual energy savings and GHG emissions reductions of approximately 45%. Two units are scheduled for installation at the GREEN×EXPO 2027 venue.
At Sagamihara Asamizo Park in Sagamihara City, Suntory Holdings and PXP jointly conducted a demonstration test and completed testing of a vending machine equipped with next-generation solar cells, known as chalcopyrite solar cells. The demonstration period ran for approximately one year from July 2025. A total of 4 panels were attached to both sides, the rear and the top of one vending machine to verify the extent to which solar power generation could cover its electricity consumption.
The demonstration data showed that chalcopyrite solar cells covered approximately 45% of the vending machine's annual electricity consumption, confirming comparable energy savings and GHG emissions reduction. Coverage was approximately 30% in summer and rose to as much as 153% over a 50-day period in sunny conditions, demonstrating that power generation varies with the season and weather. In winter, the sun's lower elevation enabled the benefits of power generation across multiple surfaces to be confirmed.
As a future initiative, 2 vending machines equipped with chalcopyrite solar cells are scheduled to be installed at the GREEN×EXPO 2027 venue in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 19 March to 26 September 2027. PXP is also working to further improve power generation efficiency through tandem configurations. The company said it will use the findings from this project to advance technology development and practical implementation aimed at achieving a decarbonized society.
