Bleisure, which combines business travel and leisure, is expanding worldwide. Friday check-ins rose 26% year on year, personal bookings immediately after business trips rose 30%, and personal travel within seven days after business trips also increased.
Worldwide corporate travel data collected through Trip.Biz and a survey of 1,700 decision-makers indicate that bleisure, combining business travel and leisure, is expanding globally. A survey of Japanese companies, which received 187 responses, highlighted the current state of business travel management and the challenges involved.
Regarding business travel management at Japanese companies, 71.7% said their business travel volumes in 2025 would be broadly unchanged from the previous year, while 61.5% said their business travel budgets were stable. The proportion of companies using both TMCs and online booking tools reached 58.8%, highlighting challenges related to visibility.
Only 10% of companies had visibility across their entire business travel program, including air tickets, hotels, ground transportation, changes, billing and expense reimbursement. The proportion of companies reporting discrepancies between booking and invoiced amounts was 65.8%, while 45.5% spent more than 6 hours per month reconciling bookings made outside approved platforms.
Factors behind the expansion of bleisure included a 26% year-on-year increase in Friday check-ins, a 30% increase in bookings that added personal plans immediately after a business trip, and a 25% increase in bookings for personal travel within seven days after a business trip. Post-trip stay extensions averaged 3.4 nights, and 60% of travelers stayed at the same hotel as during their business trip.
