The Japan Professional Baseball Players Association and Agaroot Academy have begun a partnership to provide courses free of charge to support players and former players in developing second careers. The partnership establishes a framework to support learning while players are still active and expands access to qualification courses.
Under the partnership, players belonging to the players’ association and former players will be able to take Agaroot Academy qualification-examination courses free of charge. Eligible courses cover a wide range, including the bar examination, preliminary bar examination and civil service examinations, with support also available for course and career consultations. The launch is scheduled for 9 October 2026.
The background to the partnership includes the 169 players who were released or retired after the 2025 season. Given the short length of players’ active careers, the importance of career development while still active has been highlighted. After retirement, a high proportion pursue careers related to NPB or baseball, underscoring the need to prepare for paths outside baseball.
The courses will be provided free of charge, including study materials and online lectures. The announced process involves applying through a dedicated form or for a coupon, receiving a free coupon and using it to purchase a course. The example of Kohei Miyadai (宮台 康平), who passed the bar examination, illustrates the possibilities for learning and career development after retirement.
Comments from representatives of both organizations emphasized the importance of broadening players’ future options and learning while still active. Agaroot highlighted its commitment to supporting each player in pursuing the career they envision.
