Individual investors were net buyers of ¥449.1 billion in cash equities in the second week of September, the highest level in three weeks. Buying believed to be on margin was particularly notable in bank stocks during the decline. The Nikkei Stock Average fell by more than ¥1,000 at one point.
According to the trading trends by investor type for the second week of September, published by the Tokyo Stock Exchange and covering the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Nagoya Stock Exchange combined, individual investors were net buyers of ¥449.1 billion in cash equities. This marked the first net buying in three weeks.
Margin buying appears to have emerged as bank stocks declined during the week, potentially providing support from individual investors buying on dips.
The Nikkei Stock Average fell ¥1,009, or 1.55%, during the week. Rising crude oil prices, higher long-term interest rates and the yen's appreciation have been cited as possible factors.
