In the Tokyo stock market, the Nikkei 225 was pushed down more than ¥3,000 at one point, nearing a drop below ¥60,000, amid expectations that the Democratic Party would regain a majority in the U.S. midterm elections.
The market was believed to have been affected by the view that a Democratic majority in both chambers would reduce the effectiveness of policy legislation passing through Congress. Prices remained highly volatile during the day, and the index ultimately closed ¥893.23 lower than on the previous business day at ¥62,188.63.
Mizuho Securities was reported to have said that the likelihood of reduced policy implementation effectiveness would increase in the new session beginning in January 2027, but the Nikkei 225 closed above ¥60,000.
