Japan’s defense drone industry has suddenly gained momentum, and technologically capable companies are rushing to develop new systems. Japanese companies, led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, are focusing on developing new airframes for the Self-Defense Forces, while overseas players are also exploring collaboration.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed a prototype interceptor drone designed to shoot down enemy drones within the short period of 3 months, and is considering proposing it to the Ministry of Defense. In addition to large drones, it is also suggested that the company is pursuing development of attack drones and small airframes believed to be low-cost, mass-production models.
