Sony will launch the new wireless microphone “ECM-W5.” The basic set comprises 2 transmitters and 1 receiver and is priced at ¥59,400, while the transmitter and receiver will also be sold separately. As an updated version of the existing ECM-W3/W3S, it offers enhanced internal recording capabilities.
The receiver features a new monitor, dial and touchscreen, displaying the radio signal status, battery level and whether noise reduction is enabled. It supports the MI shoe, allowing a direct connection to the camera and reducing the inconvenience of cables.
The unit also supports 32-bit float recording in the camera. When used with the α7 V or α7R VI, adding transmitters enables operation with up to 4 channels. The transmitters have 64GB of built-in memory and can record audio independently.
The receiver offers only 2 noise-reduction settings, ON and OFF, but voices remain easy to hear when recording in rainy conditions. Its features include the connectivity and ease of use characteristic of a genuine Sony product. There are also design considerations during use, such as the case’s inability to store the windscreen.
