Japan Airlines has begun full-scale operations at Hiroshima Airport using a newly introduced electric vehicle to transport containers loaded with passengers' baggage. The unveiled vehicle was changed from diesel to electric, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 131 kilograms per month.
The company uses electric vehicles at 25 airports nationwide, including Hiroshima Airport, and has set a target of reducing CO2 emissions from ground vehicles by 35% from fiscal 2019 levels by fiscal 2030. It is also pursuing other initiatives, including the use of biodiesel fuel made from used household cooking oil.
Saegusa Tomoko (三枝智子), head of Japan Airlines' Hiroshima Airport Office, said that although the impact of a single vehicle may be small, the initiative contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. She expressed her desire to use clean energy to contribute to environmental issues in the local community and help advance Hiroshima Airport's environmental initiatives.
