Nestlé Japan and Meiji have begun maritime round-trip transport between Kanto and Kansai, carrying powdered milk and beverages on return trips. The initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by cutting empty truck journeys.
Food industry leaders Nestlé Japan and Meiji began maritime round-trip transport on the 19th, carrying powdered milk from Kanto to Kansai and beverages from Kansai to Kanto by sea. Cargo from other companies will be loaded on return trips, reducing empty truck journeys. The aim is to improve both companies’ logistics efficiency.
Yusen Logistics, a subsidiary of Nippon Yusen, will arrange the entire route on an integrated basis. The service will initially operate at one round trip per month, with plans to increase the frequency to one round trip per week in the future. The goods transported will be Meiji’s powdered milk and Nestlé Japan’s beverages, providing complementary cargo in both directions.
