The parliamentary leader of South Korea’s largest opposition party met with Mizushima Koichi (水嶋光一), the Japanese ambassador to South Korea, and emphasized the importance of the stable development of Japan-South Korea relations regardless of the administration in power.
Jeong Jeom-sik (鄭点植), parliamentary leader of South Korea’s largest opposition party, People Power Party, met with Mizushima Koichi (水嶋光一), the Japanese ambassador to South Korea, at the National Assembly. Jeong said it was important for Japan-South Korea relations to develop stably regardless of the administration in power.
He said regional security uncertainty was increasing due to North Korea’s nuclear threat and missile provocations, provocations involving landmines in the DMZ, and the Russia-Ukraine war, and expressed the view that close communication and cooperation among the three countries of Japan, the United States and Japan were becoming increasingly important.
He said he was grateful that the relationship between the two countries, normalized under the administration of former President Yoon Suk Yeol (尹錫悦), had been maintained. He expressed hope that close communication would continue on the basis of mutual respect and trust and that relations would develop stably.
Jeong also referred to expanding exchanges between political parties, expressing the expectation that cooperation among the three countries would be strengthened further if the leaders of the major political parties in South Korea, the United States and Japan expanded mutual visits and exchanges. Ambassador Mizushima said that, as the international situation grew more challenging, Japan and South Korea should cooperate as partners that share values such as democracy, a market economy and the rule of law, and welcomed the increased activity in shuttle diplomacy.
The meeting took place at the request of the Japanese side.
