On 28 August, the Ministry of Finance announced that the total yen-buying intervention conducted by the government and the Bank of Japan from 30 July to 26 August amounted to ¥15.3993 trillion. It was the largest intervention on record, while the yen exchange rate reached the ¥164-per-dollar range at the end of July.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the total value of the intervention was ¥15.3993 trillion, making it the largest yen-buying intervention ever conducted jointly by the government and the Bank of Japan. The intervention was carried out from 30 July 2026 to 26 August, with the stated aim of correcting the yen's depreciation.
In late July, the yen weakened to the ¥164-per-dollar range, and on 31 July, the US Treasury and the Bank of Japan conducted coordinated intervention for the first time in 28 years. As a result, there was a period when the dollar-yen rate temporarily surged to the ¥157 range.
Since the intervention, the yen's depreciation has not intensified, and the currency has continued to trade at around ¥159 per dollar, with no moves above ¥160 observed. Attention will remain focused on future foreign-exchange trends.
Related developments include the renewed implementation of Japan-US coordinated intervention, while the future response of the government and the Bank of Japan is likely to remain a focus of the market.
