In Tokyo trading on the 6th, the Nikkei Average fell back shortly after the opening and at one point dropped more than ¥1,000 during the day. Advantest and SoftBank Group, which had been among the previous day's biggest gainers, traded lower, weighing on overall market sentiment. Selling was concentrated in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks.
The yen traded in a narrow range in the upper ¥157s against the dollar, while bonds rose amid lower oil prices. The market was wary of declines in U.S. technology stocks, while movements in foreign exchange and interest rates also influenced the market's direction.
Trading based on individual companies' earnings supported the market, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange Stock Price Index also rose at times. Honda, which raised its operating profit forecast for the current fiscal year, and Shiseido, whose operating profit for the April-June quarter exceeded market expectations, were bought.
Ito (伊藤), a senior strategist at Nomura Securities, said that earnings at many companies had recently exceeded market expectations and that, amid a lack of macroeconomic catalysts, movements in individual stocks were likely to drive the market.
