Cases of AI being used to impersonate job applicants during online interviews have been reported in Japanese recruitment settings. Cases involving North Korean IT workers impersonating other individuals, as well as the global spread of the practice, have been highlighted.
A TV Asahi report described a suspected case of AI being used to impersonate a job applicant during an online interview with a Japanese company. During the interview, discrepancies between the applicant’s voice and mouth movements, as well as unnatural Japanese, were noted. The company ended the interview, determining that AI use was highly likely.
Similar cases are said to have emerged during online interviews at another company, including cases in which the applicant’s face and voice appeared to belong to someone else. IT journalist Mikami Yo (三上洋) pointed out that North Korean IT workers may be posing as technicians from other countries to obtain remote work, creating a potential risk of gaining access to confidential information.
The article says that AI impersonation by North Korean IT workers is estimated to have involved more than 6,500 cases across 5,000 companies worldwide, and reports that the practice is beginning to enter the recruitment process at Japanese companies as well. It emphasizes the importance of background checks before hiring as a future countermeasure.
