Sakata Seed Corporation has announced that it will launch seeds for Tosen Forte, a winter-harvest bunching onion, for commercial growers. The launch is scheduled for late November 2026, with sales through JAs and seed and seedling retailers nationwide.
The variety is described as having high moisture tolerance as well as strong heat tolerance and drought resistance, helping to limit root damage during the rainy season and plant losses caused by high temperatures and dry conditions in summer. It is intended for harvesting from November onward, during the transition to autumn and winter.
As cultivation methods involving planting from July onward to avoid the rainy season have become more widespread as a measure to help plants survive the summer, the variety is said to be capable of reaching a marketable L to 2L size even when planted late, allowing shipments from early December and contributing to stable shipments within the year.
The suggested retail prices are ¥7,106 per bag of 6,000 seeds and ¥9,900 per bag of 1 dl, both including tax. The variety will be sold nationwide through JAs and seed and seedling retailers.
