Tokyo Stocks (Morning Close): Sharply Lower, Ending at the Morning Low as High-Priced Semiconductor Shares and Others Were Sold

The Nikkei average fell sharply in the morning session, ending at the low at ¥68,098.54, down ¥1,121.71 from the previous trading day. Estimated trading volume was 1.09154 billion shares and estimated trading value was ¥5.3398 trillion. There were 822 advancing issues, 682 declining issues and 52 unchanged issues.

The morning session opened with selling dominant. Although the decline temporarily eased, prices began to fall sharply under the direction of futures from around the middle of the session, and the Nikkei average quickly moved lower in response to the reaction in US stock markets. High-priced semiconductor-related shares were sold, while shipping, resource-related and bank shares were bought relatively actively. There were also periods when the number of advancing issues exceeded the number of declining issues.

Among individual stocks, Kioxia Holdings fell sharply despite active trading in the morning, Taiyo Yuden plunged, and Murata Manufacturing was also sold. Tokyo Electron and Advantest both fell, while declines in Nitto Boseki and Mitsui Mining & Smelting also stood out. Meanwhile, SoftBank Group held firm, and large financial stocks including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui FG attracted buying.
