Notion's CEO outlines the 4 stages of AI adoption and why Japanese companies remain at Level 1. The fragmentation of business data is cited as a barrier to advanced use.
Notion classifies AI adoption into 4 levels: Level 1 is using AI as a thinking partner, Level 2 as an assistant, Level 3 as an independent teammate and Level 4 as part of the company's operating system.
Globally, 57% of companies are at Level 1, 31% at Level 2, 10% at Level 3 and 2% at Level 4. In Japan, Level 1 accounts for 66%. Notion also points out that there is a major barrier between Levels 2 and 3.
One factor impeding advanced AI adoption is the fragmentation of business data. When information such as documents, spreadsheets and chats is distributed across multiple tools, AI is less able to correctly understand the relevant context, increasing the risk of erroneous decisions.
