The Nikkei Average extended its decline in the afternoon session, with selling prevailing throughout the day. The decline in semiconductor-related stocks, along with negative contributions from major stocks such as SoftBank Group, weighed on the index.
In Tokyo stock market trading on the 24th, the Nikkei Average fell for a second consecutive session, at one point declining to around ¥65,640 in afternoon trading, approximately ¥380 below the previous day's level. The index also fell to ¥65,585.17 at 12:33 p.m. as selling pressure intensified.
Among Nikkei Average constituents, SoftBank Group, Advantest and Kioxia Holdings were the largest negative contributors, with profit-taking in semiconductor-related stocks particularly evident. Meanwhile, Tokyo Electron, Recruit Holdings and Sumitomo Metal Mining supported the market with positive contributions.
Among stocks ranked by percentage declines, Mercari, Fujikura and Furukawa Electric stood out for their weakness, while mining and construction machinery-related stocks attracted interest on a relative basis. Trading volume on the Prime Market was approximately 1 billion shares, and trading value was slightly above ¥4 trillion, indicating active trading but a lack of clear direction.
Market participants said movements in the KOSPI were also spilling over into the Tokyo market, drawing attention to trends across Asian markets. Many expect movements in semiconductor-related stocks to have a particularly strong influence on the direction of the index going forward.
