OpenAI has acquired TBPN, while HubSpot has acquired Mindstream and Futurepedia. These deals are accelerating a trend in which independently run media outlets are being integrated as direct customer touchpoints for companies.
OpenAI is reportedly acquiring TBPN, a daily technology show that broadcasts live for 3 hours on weekdays, with YouTube and X as its primary platforms. The purchase price has not been disclosed, but several reports have suggested a deal value in the hundreds of millions of dollars. HubSpot has since acquired Futurepedia, an educational media outlet, and Mindstream, a daily newsletter focused on AI, rapidly bringing in audiences interested in AI and strengthening its media network.
HubSpot’s media division owns its own YouTube channels, newsletters, websites and podcasts, and works with approximately 150 creators. These media properties generate more than 50,000,000 contacts per month and are said to produce tens of thousands of leads, although the actual number of people reached is disclosed as a cumulative total of contacts. In deciding whether to build or acquire media properties, time was a major factor. Because building a brand in the AI sector takes a long time, HubSpot opted to acquire Mindstream and Futurepedia.
The acquisitions illustrate a process in which early-stage partnerships with creators are used as due diligence, followed by an acquisition once ownership becomes capable of creating value. The article explains that acquisitions mean more than simply securing short-term opportunities to reach an audience, highlighting the importance of being able to maintain relationships directly with viewers and make ongoing use of the resulting content. Through HubSpot’s example, it shows how the decision to build media in-house and the timing of an acquisition function within a company’s growth strategy.
