The Nikkei 225 rose sharply for a third consecutive day in Tokyo trading on the 13th, closing ¥784.53 higher than the previous day at 68,308.59. Semiconductor-related stocks led the market against a backdrop of U.S. CPI coming in around market expectations and firm performance by the SOX index. The TOPIX also ended 0.89% higher at 4,176.04 points, renewing its record high for a second consecutive day.
AI-related stocks led an attempt to rise in the morning, but gains stalled after the index reached a high, and AI-related stocks faced heavier selling pressure toward the close. Semiconductor-related stocks also came under profit-taking pressure at times as buying subsided, while expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike were also on investors’ minds.
Among individual stocks, Advantest renewed its record high since listing, while Recruit Holdings also renewed its record high for a second consecutive day. Semiconductor stocks including Lasertec and Disco were firm, and KOKUSAI ELECTRIC rose sharply following its addition to the index. Seibu Holdings, meanwhile, fell sharply after its removal was decided. Among earnings-related stocks, TOPPAN temporarily hit its daily price limit, while Bengo4.com also hit its daily price limit.
In emerging markets, the TSE Growth Market 250 fell 0.35%. Total trading value was approximately ¥10.020645 trillion. By sector, 24 sectors, including banks, rose, while 8 sectors, including nonferrous metals and iron and steel, fell. There was a view that the U.S. PPI release and Applied Materials’ earnings would influence the direction of semiconductor stocks going forward.
