The European Central Bank held a Governing Council meeting in Berlin and decided on another rate hike. The policy rate, the central bank deposit rate, will be raised by 0.25 percentage points to 2.5%. The increase will take effect from the 16th.
ECB President Lagarde (ラガルド) said at a news conference that inflation is expected to remain elevated for an extended period and that further rate hikes would maintain a framework for navigating uncertainty.
Eurozone inflation in August was 3.3% year on year, rising for the second consecutive month to its highest level in about three years. The increase was driven by higher energy prices and supply concerns.
Following the ECB's decision, attention is also turning to the moves of other major central banks, with some expecting financial conditions to influence price trends going forward.
