The Nikkei 225 was sharply lower at the morning close, with semiconductor stocks weak following losses in the SOX Index. Software-related stocks, however, showed relative strength, while individual stocks saw significant price movements.
At the morning close, the Nikkei 225 was down ¥1,043.96 from the previous trading day at ¥65,361.60. Estimated morning trading volume was 946.38 million shares and estimated trading value was ¥3.5262 trillion. Advancing issues numbered 696, declining issues 795, and 62 issues were unchanged.
The SOX Index fell sharply in the US market at the end of last week, sending selling pressure in major stocks into the Tokyo market. The Nikkei 225 was at one point down more than ¥1,200, but buying interest turned toward software-related stocks even amid weakness in semiconductor stocks, with some buying aimed at a return reversal.
Among individual stocks, Advantest fell sharply, while Tokyo Electron and Disco also declined. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and JX Advanced Metals fell, as did Matsuya, Toho Zinc and Toyo Engineering. Buying interest, however, was seen first in Kioxia Holdings, and also turned toward megabanks including Mizuho Financial Group. Fast Retailing also showed resilience, while クオンツ総研ホールディングス, Appier Group and Strike Group posted sharp gains.
