Metaplanet, listed on the TSE Standard market, announced that it had increased its bitcoin holdings to 44,000 BTC. At current prices, the holdings are worth approximately ¥600 billion, making them the world's second-largest corporate holdings.
Metaplanet announced on 5 October 2026 that its bitcoin holdings had reached 44,000 BTC. They were equivalent to approximately ¥600 billion at the price when announced. The amount is the second-largest among listed companies worldwide.
The company's predecessor was Red Planet Japan, which specialized in the hotel business. After its lodging operations contracted during the COVID-19 pandemic, it brought in Simon Gerovich, formerly of Goldman Sachs, as president and changed its corporate name to Metaplanet in 2023. It currently plans to redevelop its hotels as "Bitcoin Hotels."
Bitcoin was not mentioned in the company's earnings summaries, but it announced its bitcoin purchases in 2024 and subsequently indicated a policy of holding assets primarily in bitcoin rather than yen. While valuation gains and losses resulting from bitcoin price movements have generated final losses, there have also been periods when the company maintained operating profitability in its financial results.
The company also uses funding methods other than conventional common stock, including issuing bonds known as BitBonds, issuing preferred shares and borrowing against bitcoin as collateral. While accepting dilution from share issuance, it has adopted BTC yield, a metric focused on the increase in bitcoin per share, as a management indicator. As of September 2026, it had achieved both growth in shareholder value and an increase in its bitcoin holdings.
