In this interview for newly hired employees, Miki Senju (千住美樹) discusses what prompted her to choose a career at Sojitz, her current involvement in the fisheries business after gaining experience in the Finance Department, and the challenges she hopes to take on in the future.
Miki Senju (千住美樹), who majored in fisheries, decided to join a general trading company where she could address the challenges facing Japan’s primary industries while taking a comprehensive view of the entire supply chain. She was particularly attracted by the opportunity to create new value on the global stage through the fisheries business.
After joining Sojitz, she was assigned to the Finance Department, where she was involved in finance and accounting operations as well as the review of business investment proposals. Although she initially hoped to work on the front lines of the fisheries business, deepening her financial knowledge enabled her to develop the ability to understand businesses from a numerical perspective. Learning systematically how to make investment decisions and balance risk and return also proved to be a major asset.
After gaining experience in the Finance Department, she transferred to the Fisheries Business Section, where she was responsible for managing an operating company. By combining the perspective she developed in finance with a practical understanding of operations, she learned to assess the business from multiple angles, evaluating not only profitability and investment efficiency but also operational challenges and growth potential.
She is currently responsible for DEI and organizational development in the First Human Resources Department, and says she hopes to take on new challenges on the front lines of the fisheries business again in the future. Guided by her original aspiration when she joined, “to ensure that fish never disappear from the dining table,” she aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the fisheries industry through both organizational development and business operations.
