The WRX manual-transmission model had disappeared for many years, but returned in 2025. Through the reuse of the production line and a short one-year development period, it was developed into a car offering a new-generation joy of driving.
Fan requests were cited as the catalyst behind the revival of the WRX manual transmission. The revival plans became concrete around February 2025, and the possibility of reusing the production line emerged.
The development structure was organised as a short, intensive project and proceeded at a pace that exceeded conventional development methods, including the formation of an anonymous team. Responsibility for the project was supplemented by support from senior management, with the aim of completing it within one year.
The new specifications centred on a combination of a 2.4L turbo engine and the TY85 manual transmission, incorporating technology derived from motorsports. The design was intended to enhance the direct feel of throttle input and torque transmission.
The completed car was designed to offer the joy of driving suited to modern sports performance, and the final specifications were determined with emphasis on customer feedback and driving impressions. Fan support and public response also helped drive the revival.
