Under the Japan-US Strategic Investment Initiative, GlobalFoundries has announced the first semiconductor investment to proceed in phases at its Malta, New York site. The total investment could reach $21 billion, with construction and operations expected to begin following an initial investment of approximately $10 billion.
GF has announced plans to build a new 300mm fab in phases at its Malta, New York site under the strategic investment initiative of the Japanese and US governments. The total project value could reach $21 billion, with approximately $10 billion to be invested initially for preliminary construction, construction scheduled to begin in 2026 and operations targeted to start in 2029.
Alongside the fab construction, GF will participate as the technology provider and operator, strengthening its cooperation with Japanese companies including Tokyo Electron and Renesas. Once the first fab is completed, it will enable the production of approximately 900,000 additional 300mm wafers annually in the United States. A second fab is expected to be built in the future subject to additional investment.
The project is being advanced under the framework of the Japanese and US governments and regional support measures, including New York State’s Green CHIPS program. It is expected to strengthen Japanese companies’ supply base in the United States and promote geographic diversification of supply chains. Through its participating partners, GF is positioned as expanding the semiconductor ecosystem between Japan and the United States and strengthening cooperation from an economic security perspective.
