Tokyo stocks fell back on the 21st, with the Nikkei Average down approximately ¥200. Although consumer-related stocks were weak, losses narrowed despite thin trading.
As of 23:00, the Nikkei Average closed at ¥66,016.36, down ¥200.43 from the previous day. Trading volume on the Prime Market was approximately 2.20859 billion shares, while trading value was approximately ¥7.9134 trillion. A total of 883 issues advanced, 622 declined and 51 were unchanged.
Consumer-related stocks fell against a backdrop of declines in U.S. stocks the previous day and higher crude oil prices, but after the initial wave of selling passed, losses narrowed while the market remained weak. Fast Retailing and Ryohin Keikaku were among the weaker performers, and the market at one point fell by more than ¥900.
By contrast, Kioxia Holdings, Advantest and Tokyo Electron attracted buying, while shipping stocks Nippon Yusen, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Kawasaki Kisen also rose. Overall, bargain hunting in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks became active, and TOPIX showed signs of a modest rebound.
