Production of grain-oriented electrical steel (GO) for transformers is expanding against a backdrop of rising electricity demand in the US. Cleveland-Cliffs is currently the only GO producer in North America. Nippon Steel and BRS, as well as US Steel, which is now under Nippon Steel, are planning production, while startup Flux Steel has announced plans to build a new line in Ohio as the third GO producer.
Cleveland-Cliffs plans to increase GO production by up to 25% at its Butler plant in Pennsylvania in early 2028. The investment will total $200 million, and the company is expected to receive a $75 million grant from the US Department of Energy.
