The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has announced a new strategy, the “Storytelling Nation Five-Year Plan,” to significantly expand Japanese-origin IP in overseas markets. The plan aims to accelerate the global rollout of domestic IP.
At the core of the strategy, the government set the expansion of overseas sales to approximately ¥20 trillion as the KGI and outlined a policy of providing large-scale, long-term and strategic support over the five-year period.
The government identified measures including deregulation, intellectual property protection, anti-piracy measures, removal of barriers to overseas expansion, talent development and improvements to the funding environment, emphasizing the creation of conditions that make it easier for the private sector to take on new challenges.
At the same time, it referred to lessons from past Cool Japan policies and said a framework should be established to promote private-sector growth without excessive public funding.
