Morinaga Milk Industry has built a plant data-utilisation platform and digitised forms with AWS IoT Greengrass. It is rolling out the initiative from Tone Plant to Kobe Plant and accelerating production DX by transmitting OT data over a closed network.
The company adopted an IoT software platform that transfers data from plant equipment and control systems to AWS via edge servers, and proceeded with the digitisation of forms and construction of a data-utilisation platform. The initiative was designed to promote the use of data at production sites through the automatic ingestion of OT data and the conversion of paper forms into electronic forms.
The project began in July 2025, with Tone Plant serving as the pilot site, and rollout to Kobe Plant proceeded from March 2026. Because data formats and control methods differ by plant, the project introduced measures to handle data differences and limit bandwidth usage, including ZIP-compressed transfers. Communications were separated, with OT data transmitted over a closed network and administrative systems communicating via the Internet.
With support from Classmethod, development proceeded through weekly meetings and Backlog. Development was primarily conducted internally, supplemented by technical support. The speed and accuracy of responses, together with expertise on unfamiliar services, helped staff concentrate on their work.
The company plans to roll out the initiative to all domestic plants by the end of the fiscal year ending March 2029. It expects to eliminate approximately 5,000 paper forms annually and reduce working hours by approximately 800 hours. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the workload at production sites and optimise manufacturing conditions and achieve predictive maintenance through the accumulation of data.
