Shikoku Electric announced plans to develop a branch line for an international submarine cable and a cable landing hub in Tokushima Prefecture. The initiative aims to establish communications infrastructure connecting Shikoku with international communications networks and accelerate the development of regional digital infrastructure, including efforts to attract data centers.
A branch line will be built off the main cable route off Tokushima Prefecture, and a new landing hub will be established in Anan. Details of the project will be finalized going forward.
On the same day, the company was selected for a Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications subsidy program supporting the decentralization of submarine cable landing hubs. The subsidy rates are 1/2 for development of the landing hub and 4/5 for development of the branch line. The project will use the Digital Infrastructure Development Fund.
Shikoku Electric reorganized in July and established the Digital Infrastructure Development Office. It aims to attract large-scale data centers to Shikoku and accelerate the development of necessary infrastructure, including communications cables.
