Dell Technologies announced on 27 October that John Robotom had become the new president of its Japanese subsidiary and held a briefing for the media. Robotom discussed Dell's current situation and the current state of AI adoption in Japan.
Robotom had spent more than 7 years at Dell, after which he was responsible for cloud and infrastructure modernisation and semiconductor-related businesses at companies including Microsoft Japan. He explained that he had returned to Dell after about 10 years.
He introduced Dell's research findings showing that AI adoption in Japan is moving from the proof-of-concept stage toward more full-scale use. At the same time, he pointed to challenges including security, privacy and data reliability as aspects of Trusted AI, as well as a shortage of skilled personnel, ROI and the development of infrastructure for AI.
Robotom said, “Even if you make new investments and build large-scale systems, the challenge is how to make use of the data,” and stressed the importance of putting in place measures covering data handling and security.
He pointed out that collaboration with partner companies would be important for success in the Japanese market. He identified AI investments that lead to results, data and infrastructure development, and co-creation with partners as key themes going forward.
