Modalis leads epigenome editing development in Japan and has multiple pipelines using CRISPR/Cas. MDL-101 is an epigenome editing therapy targeting LAMA2-RD, with clinical trial initiation in the United States expected from late 2026 to the first half of 2027.
Modalis, which is developing epigenome editing therapies in Japan, disclosed that it is developing multiple pipelines using CRISPR/Cas systems. This is advancing the development of technologies aimed at regulating gene expression through epigenome modification in specific diseases.
One of the company’s representative programs is MDL-101, an epigenome editing therapy for congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (LAMA2-RD). MDL-101 uses existing editing technologies to target epigenetic changes associated with the disease.
MDL-101 is expected to enter clinical development in the United States from late 2026 to early 2027. The specific timing is expected to depend on the local development schedule.
An interview was conducted on 6 August 2026 with Representative Director and CEO Morita Haruhiko (森田晴彦), who discussed the status of the pipeline and the company’s development strategy.
