In the New York market on August 17, the dollar rose against the yen, while crude oil was bought on supply concerns. U.S. economic indicators improved, and the euro moved against both the dollar and the yen.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 17th, USD/JPY rose from ¥159.20 to ¥159.60 by the close. In addition to improvements in the August New York Fed Manufacturing Business Conditions Index and the August NAHB Housing Market Index, both of which exceeded expectations, reports concerning the deadline for a memorandum aimed at ending the war between the United States and Iran prompted dollar buying against a backdrop of higher crude oil prices and rising long-term interest rates.
EUR/USD fell from $1.1600 to $1.1564 by the close, while EUR/JPY rose to ¥184.77 before closing at ¥184.54. GBP/USD rose to $1.3569 before retreating to $1.3531, while USD/CHF moved from CHF0.8084 to CHF0.8117.
NY crude oil futures extended their gains on the 17th. Amid reports that President Trump had not indicated an intention to request an extension ahead of the memorandum deadline and that Iran had seized a tanker, concerns grew that supply disruptions would be prolonged, prompting further buying.
