The new film “Godzilla -0.0” will be released simultaneously in Japan and North America. It will open in Japan on 3 November and in North America on the 6th, with Toho aiming for a worldwide hit by developing its own distribution network.
It is unusual for the Japanese monster film “Godzilla -0.0” to be released simultaneously in Japan and North America. It was announced that the Japanese release will be on 3 November and the North American release on the 6th. Toho is reportedly aiming for a hit that will surpass the previous film, “Godzilla -1.0.”
In 2023, Toho established a new company to oversee its overseas operations and developed its overseas distribution network by bringing under its umbrella a US company that distributes Japanese anime. This has enabled Toho to distribute its own films overseas and establish a structure for strategically managing release schedules and promotion.
The film depicts Godzilla reappearing in postwar Japan and the people who confront it. The director is Takashi Yamazaki (山崎 貴), who also directed the previous film. A release during the same period is planned in Europe and Asia in addition to North America, and the number of release countries is expected to expand to approximately 80, exceeding the roughly 50 countries for the previous film. Worldwide box-office revenue could exceed the previous film’s approximately ¥16 billion.
3 November is the day the first film, “Godzilla,” was released, and Toho commemorates it as “Godzilla Day.” Director and Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota (大田 圭二) has indicated that the company is targeting a worldwide hit.
