Tokyo stocks opened on 17 September with the Nikkei up ¥720 from the previous day, but gains narrowed as AI-related and semiconductor stocks weakened.
The Nikkei Stock Average opened in Tokyo at ¥64,643.58, up ¥720.58 from the previous day. High-priced AI-related stocks and semiconductor-related stocks weakened, at times capping the market's gains.
Concerns over a slowdown in AI development weighed on the market, while 80% of Prime Market stocks advanced. The post-FOMC rate hike decision was reported to have been in line with expectations, prompting some to suggest that buying was leading the market.
The yen moved weaker against the dollar, and buying continued across a broad range of stocks after the opening.
