Japan Post announced that its initial issue of New Year's postcards for 2027 would total 555.92 million, a decline of 25.7% from the same point a year earlier. This means the issue of New Year's postcards is expected to fall below the previous year's level for the 16th consecutive year.
Sales of the postcards are scheduled to begin on 2 November at post offices and other locations nationwide.
Next year's sales period will be extended by approximately 5 days from the previous period, through 15 January, and the benchmark date for delivery on New Year's Day will change from 25 December to 27 December.
A Japan Post official said the company recognizes that people are increasingly moving away from sending New Year's cards and intends to limit the decline as much as possible.
