オーテックジャパン announced the S&S Drift Package, equipped with a VG30DET and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Production is believed to have totaled 5 units, with only about 2–3 operational vehicles thought to remain.
The S&S Drift Package announced by オーテックジャパン around 1994 was a special-edition R31 Skyline equipped with a VG30DET and a 4-speed automatic transmission. When customers supplied the vehicle, the price was ¥2 million, including the modification application; complete vehicles including the base car were priced at ¥3–3.5 million depending on model year and grade. Production totaled 5 units including prototypes, and only 2–3 are said to have been confirmed as still operational, making it an extremely rare R31 model.
The S&S Drift Package reflects the vision of Shinichiro Sakurai, who was forced to leave the R31 development program due to illness. Sakurai said he wanted to modify the R31, which he had been unable to complete to the end, and present it as one possible answer. The package made use of the VG30DET and 4-speed automatic combination.
The circumstances surrounding the first launch of the 1990 Autech Zagato Stelvio are also related to this project. Although sales were limited to 200 units, actual deliveries exceeded 100 units only slightly, creating the issue of how to dispose of surplus engines and transmissions. In 1992, the limited-edition Zagato Gavia was added in a run of 30 units. This left multiple VG30DET engines and 4-speed automatic transmissions unused, and the S&S Drift Package was planned as a way to put them to use.
The vehicle used for the interview had its transmission converted to a 5-speed manual. The owner also owns a Stelvio and explained that the transmission was swapped using the power units from the two cars. Other specification changes introduced include Autech-custom Work E-WING wheels, ADThree side steps, and a More Collage rear spoiler.
In the driving impressions, the 3.0-liter VG30DET is noted for its abundant torque even in third and fourth gears, as well as its ability to rev to around 7000 rpm. The change in final-drive ratio to 3.7 is also said to have improved high-rpm acceleration.
