Nippon Steel will invest approximately $3 billion to build new hot-strip steel manufacturing capacity at U.S. Steel's Mon Valley plant in the United States. Operations are targeted to begin in the second half of 2029.
According to reports from New York, U.S. Steel, which was acquired by Nippon Steel, announced plans to invest approximately $3 billion to build a hot-strip mill at its Mon Valley plant. This will form part of the approximately $11 billion in total investment associated with Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel. The investment is expected to be larger than in previous plans.
The planned hot-strip mill will process heated steel slabs into thin sheets at high temperatures. It is intended to expand production capacity for automotive steel sheet and other products and enhance the company's competitiveness. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2029. The site is U.S. Steel's Mon Valley plant in Pennsylvania.
Nippon Steel initially estimated the Mon Valley project at up to $2.5 billion, but the investment amount increased to reflect higher labor costs and inflation. The announcement is positioned as part of the investment being made following the completion of Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel in June 2025.
