In an interview, former Bank of Japan Policy Board member Kataoka Takeshi (片岡 剛士) discusses the direction of the Takaichi Sanae (高市 早苗) administration’s growth strategy. The policy calls for ¥370 trillion in combined public- and private-sector investment in 17 strategic fields, including AI and semiconductors, by the 2030s.
The Takaichi Sanae (高市 早苗) administration will carry forward the Abe approach in foreign and national security policy, while pursuing a new direction in economic policy, with plans to invest a cumulative ¥370 trillion from the public and private sectors by fiscal 2040 in 17 strategic fields, including AI and semiconductors. Kataoka Takeshi (片岡 剛士), an expert with a background at the Bank of Japan, explained the direction of this growth strategy.
It was explained that Japan’s economy when Abenomics began differed from today’s, with the yen at around ¥86 to the US dollar, the Nikkei at around the mid-¥10,000 range, and the unemployment rate in the 4% range. The discussion also looked back at the three arrows: bold monetary policy, flexible fiscal policy and a growth strategy to stimulate private investment.
Kataoka was involved in monetary policy as a Bank of Japan Policy Board member and has served as an expert adviser to the Japan Growth Strategy Council under the Takaichi administration. The article presents the current policy direction by organising the areas of continuity and change in economic policy.
