NEDO announced the Biomanufacturing Revolution Promotion Project, which will provide integrated support for technology development and social implementation from fiscal 2023 through fiscal 2032, with a budget of approximately ¥270 billion. The project aims to build value chains using diverse raw materials and products and achieve sustainable manufacturing.
The project is intended to promote the practical application of biomanufacturing across a broad range of industries, including chemicals, materials, textiles and fuels, in addition to pharmaceuticals and food products, and to advance social implementation that replaces conventional petroleum-based manufacturing processes. It will provide integrated support for the development and demonstration of technologies covering the collection and conversion of unused resources into usable materials, technologies for modifying microorganisms and other organisms, production, separation, purification and processing, and the development and demonstration of the social implementation infrastructure, including systems and standardisation. This will facilitate the construction of value chains linking diverse raw materials with end products, contributing to stronger industrial competitiveness and the resolution of social issues.
The research and development programme is based on 5 areas: the development and demonstration of technologies for collecting and converting unused resources into usable materials; the advancement of platform technologies for developing, breeding and modifying industrial microorganisms; technologies for producing target substances using microorganisms; the development and demonstration of separation, purification and processing technologies; and the development of evaluation methods for social implementation. These activities will be carried out in line with the Biomanufacturing Revolution Promotion Project Research and Development Plan, with a framework established to verify both the technologies and their social implementation simultaneously.
