The Nikkei rose more than ¥850 at the close in Tokyo on the 25th, extending its winning streak to 5 sessions. The broader market remained firm on buying of AI- and semiconductor-related stocks and bank shares.
In Tokyo trading on the 25th, the Nikkei 225 closed up ¥850.21 from the previous day at ¥66,364.20. Estimated trading volume was 2.1492 billion shares, while estimated trading value was ¥7.8008 trillion. Advancing issues accounted for approximately 71% of the market, at 1,118, compared with 382 declining issues and 54 unchanged issues.
Although the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell from the previous day, strength in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks stood out in Tokyo, with Tokyo Electron and Advantest among the stocks that rose. Bank shares including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group also advanced. Buying ahead of the final cum-rights trading day for companies with March fiscal year-ends also supported the market. Some market participants said the US-China summit's discussion of AI regulation provided reassurance.
Among individual stocks, Kioxia Holdings, Advantest and Tokyo Electron rose, while Taiyo Yuden, Fujikura and Disco remained firm. Mizuho Financial Group, Tokio Marine Holdings and Japan Post Bank also performed steadily. SoftBank Group, meanwhile, fell, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Nintendo and Shin-Etsu Chemical were among the weaker performers.
