Tokyo stocks were dominated throughout the 27th by buying back AI-related and semiconductor stocks, with the Nikkei Stock Average widening its gains toward the afternoon session. The index was at one point up nearly ¥1,500 late in the session, but ultimately closed ¥1,078.72 higher, with trading remaining active. Estimated trading volume was 2.24473 billion shares, while estimated trading value was ¥6.936 trillion. The Nikkei Average finished trading at ¥63,268.37.
The strength of major U.S. market indexes spread to the Japanese market. Anthropic's public filing of a prospectus for an IPO was reported to have stimulated share prices of AI infrastructure-related stocks in both Japan and the United States. Interest in AI and semiconductor-related stocks strengthened throughout the day, with advancers outnumbering decliners.
Among individual stocks, Advantest, Lasertec and Disco were bought, while SoftBank Group, Ibiden, Murata Manufacturing, Keyence and Hitachi were also firm. Fanuc and JX Advanced Metals rose as well. In contrast, Recruit Holdings, Sony Group, Nintendo, Daiichi Sankyo, JT and Takeda Pharmaceutical were weak, while Giftee Group and Japan Exchange Group also declined.
Real estate stocks also saw notable declines at times, with Mitsubishi Estate, Mitsui Fudosan and Sumitomo Realty & Development among those reported lower. Overall, movements in AI and semiconductor-related stocks drove the market's direction, with a rebound in a specific sector serving as a major factor behind the market's gains.
