According to Chofu Keizai Shimbun, PowerX and Energy Vault Japan have formed a strategic partnership centered on supplying energy storage systems to the United States. The systems will be manufactured in Japan and designed to meet FEOC requirements, with a U.S. launch targeted for 2027. The companies also aim to collaborate in markets including Japan, the United States and Australia.
PowerX has executed a strategic partnership agreement with Energy Vault Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of Energy Vault Holdings, to explore the supply of energy storage systems for the U.S. market. Under the agreement, the companies expect to launch the Mega Power series in the United States in 2027 and are considering supplying up to 1.5 GWh.
The Mega Power series consists of 3 product lines: the containerized energy storage system Mega Power, an all-in-one grid connection package incorporating Grid Connector, and Mega Power DC for data centers, which incorporates large-scale batteries. If supplied, the systems will be manufactured at plants in Japan and designed to comply with FEOC requirements.
Demand for energy storage systems is expected to expand against a backdrop of U.S. data center growth and the adoption of renewable energy. The EIA forecasts that new installations in 2026 will reach a record 24 GW. FEOC regulations are expected to make component suppliers and country of origin factors in product selection, and the companies are said to believe that vertically integrated Japanese-U.S. products can meet this demand.
The companies also aim to collaborate in the development, financing, construction and operation of energy storage facilities and data center businesses in markets including Japan, the United States and Australia. The scope of collaboration will be determined for each project, and the companies say they will use Energy Vault's global platform to advance PowerX's overseas expansion.
